Know the exam’s shape
The NCMHCE is 11 clinical case studies over 255 minutes, spanning five scored domains. Assessment/diagnosis and counseling skills carry the most weight, so give them the most study time.
Master diagnosis with the DSM-5-TR
Accurate diagnosis is the single biggest lever on this exam. Practice differentiating presentations that look similar, and get comfortable reasoning from a client narrative to the most-supported diagnosis.
Practice full cases, not facts
Because the exam is case-based, flashcards only go so far. Work realistic simulations from intake through treatment planning, under time, then review the rationale for every choice. Our free NCMHCE simulator runs cases in the same format.
A realistic study plan
Give yourself several weeks: review each domain, then shift to full timed case practice, then target the specific case types and question styles you miss most. Consistency beats cramming for a clinical-judgment exam.
