RBT Competency Assessment: What Happens and Who Signs Off

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Initial Competency Assessment is a 19-task skills check you must pass after your 40-hour training and no more than 90 days before you submit your BACB application. A BCBA or BCaBA who has completed the 8-hour supervision training leads it, and at least 3 of the skill-acquisition and behavior-reduction tasks have to be shown with a real client rather than in role-play. It can be done in person, live over the internet, or from videos recorded for the assessment, across as many sessions as needed. The initial-assessment details below follow the BACB packet effective January 1, 2026.

What tasks are on the RBT competency assessment?
The 2026 form has 19 tasks in four sections. Measurement covers continuous measurement, discontinuous measurement, and data and graphs (tasks 1 to 3). Assessment covers preference assessments and ABC data (4 and 5). Skill Acquisition and Behavior Reduction includes discrete-trial teaching, naturalistic teaching, chaining, shaping, discrimination training, prompting, token systems, crisis or emergency procedures, and one of antecedent interventions, differential reinforcement or extinction (6 to 14). Professionalism and Requirements covers session notes, client dignity, professional boundaries, supervision requirements and clinical direction (15 to 19).
Who can conduct the RBT competency assessment?
A Responsible Assessor who holds BCaBA or BCBA certification and has completed the 8-hour supervision training. Assistant assessors may help if they hold an active RBT certification or higher and have shown proficiency through direct observation. No assessor may be related to, subordinate to, or employed by you, and everyone involved must work for, or contract with, the organization that serves the client. The person who taught your 40-hour training is allowed to be your assessor.
Can the competency assessment be done online or by role-play?
Yes, within limits. Besides in-person sessions, the BACB allows live sessions over the internet and observation of videos recorded specifically for the assessment. Role-play is permitted when circumstances do not allow working with a client, but three tasks in the Skill Acquisition and Behavior Reduction section must still be demonstrated with a client. Tasks 16 to 19 are assessed by interview only.
What happens if I fail a task on the competency assessment?
You try again. The assessor can give corrective feedback and assess that task on another day, repeating the process until you show competence, although no corrective feedback may be given during the final assessment of a task. Your application must include the completed BACB form (other forms are rejected), and the Responsible Assessor keeps the records for at least seven years.
Is there a competency assessment for RBT renewal?
RBTs who recertify in 2026 complete the Recertification Competency Assessment, a 20-task version that cannot be completed more than 45 days before the certification expires. Under the BACB transition rules, 2026 is the last recertification that requires it before the new 2-year recertification cycle begins.

Question 1

An RBT is implementing a backward chaining procedure to teach a young learner how to put on a winter jacket. The supervising BCBA explains that this approach was selected to help maintain the learner's motivation throughout training. What is the PRIMARY benefit of this backward chaining procedure?

▸ Why B is the answer

In backward chaining, the technician completes all initial steps of the task analysis and prompts the learner to complete the final step, ensuring the learner directly accesses the terminal reinforcer at the conclusion of every trial. Having the learner independently initiate the very first step of the chain on every trial describes forward chaining, where instruction begins with the initial behavior. Practicing every individual step of the task analysis during each trial characterizes total-task presentation, not backward chaining. Mastering the steps in strict chronological order from beginning to end is the defining feature of forward chaining, whereas backward chaining teaches steps in reverse order.

🔑 Key takeaway

Backward chaining ensures the learner completes the final step and accesses the terminal reinforcer on every trial.

Question 2

An RBT is conducting discrete trial teaching with a client. When the client makes an error pointing to a picture, the RBT demonstrates the correct response, guides the client to point to it, presents an easy distractor task, and then presents the original trial again. Which error correction sequence is the RBT implementing?

▸ Why C is the answer

The model, prompt, switch, and retest sequence is a common four-step error correction procedure in discrete trial teaching. The RBT models the correct response, prompts the learner to emit the correct response, switches tasks by presenting an unrelated distractor trial to break stimulus control, and then retests the original target stimulus to check for correct responding. The option containing prompt, reinforce, distract, retest is incorrect because reinforcement is not provided following an error, and the procedure begins with modeling. The options listing model, ignore, transfer, expand and prompt, delay, switch, reinforce are incorrect because they fail to follow the standardized four-step error correction sequence and introduce irrelevant teaching procedures.

🔑 Key takeaway

A standard four-step error correction sequence follows model, prompt, switch, and retest.

Question 3

An RBT presents three sight-word cards and delivers the instruction, Touch CAT, emphasizing the target word with a noticeably louder and higher-pitched tone than usual. The client immediately selects the card reading cat. Why should the RBT avoid altering their voice inflection when stating target instructions?

▸ Why D is the answer

Vocal inflection differences when stating a target instruction can function as an unintentional vocal prompt. Emphasizing, stressing, or raising pitch on the target word provides an extra stimulus that controls the client's selection, preventing the natural vocal instruction or visual stimulus from acquiring true stimulus control. Triggering an extinction burst is incorrect because the RBT provided reinforcement, whereas extinction requires withholding reinforcement. Changing the primary motivating operation is incorrect because vocal inflection alters discriminative stimuli, not the value of the reinforcer or frequency of behavior. Requiring the supervisor to re-evaluate the target definition is incorrect because inadvertent prompts require technician self-monitoring and procedural fidelity adjustments rather than changing target operational definitions.

🔑 Key takeaway

Inadvertent vocal inflection changes serve as extra prompts that hinder proper stimulus control.
