RBT Requirements: Eligibility Checklist for 2026

To apply for Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification you must be at least 18 and hold at least a high school-level education or the equivalent. You must also pass a criminal background check and an abuse registry check no more than 180 days before paying for your application. You also need a 40-hour training finished in 5 to 180 days and an Initial Competency Assessment completed within 90 days before you apply. A BCBA, BCaBA or FL-CBA connected to your organization signs an attestation confirming your age, education and checks.

What documents do I upload with my RBT application?
Three: the RBT Certification Application Attestation form, your 40-hour training certificate, and the completed Initial Competency Assessment on the BACB form. The attestation must be signed no more than 90 days before you pay, by someone who is not related to, subordinate to, or employed by you. Enter your full legal name exactly as it appears on your government ID, or you will not be able to take the exam.
Where do I take the 40-hour RBT training?
Not from the BACB, which does not provide it; employers, universities and online programs do. If you apply on or after January 1, 2026, your training must meet the RBT 2026 40-Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline and be designed and overseen by a BCaBA, BCBA or BCBA-D who has completed the 8-hour supervision training. It can run in person or online, and assigned readings do not count toward the 40 hours.
Do I need fingerprinting for the RBT background check?
The BACB does not require fingerprinting, though your state or organization might. The check must be comparable to those required for home health aides, child care professionals and teachers in the community where you will provide services. If no abuse registry exists where you are, you may mark it as unavailable on the attestation form.
How long is an RBT application valid?
An application stays active for 90 days, and the BACB asks you to allow two weeks for staff to process it. If you do not meet every requirement within those 90 days, you must reapply and pay the fee again. Once approved, you have one year to sit the exam.
Who can apply for RBT certification?
Residents of the United States, of Canada except Ontario, and of Australia until January 1, 2027. When you apply you must also disclose any physical or mental health condition, or substance use disorder, that could impair your ability to work safely and competently as a behavior technician.
