RBT Supervision Requirements, Explained

A practicing Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) must be supervised for at least 5% of the hours spent providing behavior-analytic services each calendar month. Within that, the BACB requires at least two face-to-face, real-time contacts a month (phone calls and email do not count), at least one of them individual rather than small-group, and your supervisor must observe you providing services in at least one. Supervision comes from an RBT Supervisor, who holds BCBA or BCaBA certification, or an RBT Requirements Coordinator, who holds BCBA certification.

How do I calculate 5% supervision?
Multiply the hours you provided behavior-analytic services in the calendar month by 0.05. An RBT who delivers 100 service hours in a month needs at least 5 hours of supervision, and 60 hours of service needs at least 3. If you work for two organizations, each must meet the requirement on its own: the BACB says you cannot split it as 3% at one and 2% at the other.
Can RBT supervision be done remotely?
Yes. The BACB prefers in-person, on-site observation but allows it through web cameras, video-conferencing or similar tools. What does not count is supervision over the phone or by email, because the contacts must be face to face and in real time.
What is the limit for group supervision?
Small-group meetings may include 2 to 10 RBTs who share similar experiences, and they must be interactive. At least one of your two monthly supervision contacts has to be an individual session.
Who is allowed to supervise an RBT?
An RBT Supervisor must hold BCBA or BCaBA certification, and an RBT Requirements Coordinator must hold BCBA certification. Both must complete a training based on the Supervisor Training Curriculum Outline (2.0) before supervising anyone. The noncertified RBT Supervisor role was eliminated on January 1, 2026.
What happens if supervision requirements are not met?
An RBT found substantially noncompliant faces immediate termination of certification and cannot reapply for six months. You may practice only while an RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator is on record with the BACB, and supervision records must be kept for at least seven years.

Question 1

During a clinic session, two maintenance workers enter the therapy room to replace ceiling light fixtures and repair an air duct with power tools. What is the BEST way for the RBT to handle this situation in session documentation?

▸ Why A is the answer

Documenting environmental variables that may affect client behavior is required under BACB standards. Active construction, unfamiliar workers, and loud machinery noise can influence client reactivity, attention, and task engagement. Recording the workers' presence and noise as an environmental variable provides the supervisor with context when analyzing session data. Omission of the repair event is incorrect because physical disruptions inside the therapy setting directly impact behavior. Documenting only target behaviors fails to capture external factors influencing performance. Canceling data collection without notes is inappropriate because technicians must complete session documentation and report objective observations rather than abandoning data collection entirely.

🔑 Key takeaway

Active repairs and unfamiliar workers inside the session area are environmental variables that must be documented.

Question 2

An RBT is completing end-of-session documentation after running discrete trial training on receptive identification of common objects. Which detail is MOST important for the RBT to include when documenting the client's skill acquisition progress?

▸ Why B is the answer

Objective session documentation requires recording precise data on client performance and specific prompt levels during skill acquisition programs. Documenting the prompt levels required and accuracy on targeted trials enables the supervisor to evaluate whether the client is progressing toward independent responding or requires intervention adjustments. Noting the client's subjective mood is incorrect because documentation must remain objective and measurable rather than relying on unobservable states. Making a personal prediction about mastery is inappropriate because technicians should report factual outcomes rather than speculative opinions. Including general feedback from other technicians fails to document the individual client's actual trial performance.

🔑 Key takeaway

Session notes must objectively record the client's prompt levels and trial accuracy on acquisition targets.

Question 3

An RBT notices that a fellow technician has been submitting timesheets claiming full direct service hours while regularly arriving thirty minutes late. What is the BEST action for the RBT to take?

▸ Why C is the answer

RBTs must adhere to organizational policies and ethical guidelines by reporting suspected misconduct, such as billing fraud or falsified timesheets, directly through the established chain of command. Reporting the concern to their direct supervisor following the chain of command ensures the allegation is investigated properly and confidentially by leadership. Confronting the coworker directly during a session is unprofessional, compromises client care, and risks escalation. Posting details about the coworker on social media breaches workplace privacy and confidentiality standards. Altering another employee's electronic time logs is unauthorized, unethical, and a potential violation of law that RBTs must never attempt.

🔑 Key takeaway

Suspected timesheet falsification or billing fraud must be reported to a supervisor through the chain of command.
