How to Become an LPC in Texas

Texas does not make you choose one national exam: its Behavioral Health Executive Council accepts the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) as well as the National Counselor Examination (NCE) for the LPC. You need no prior approval to register, and the council sets no limit on attempts. Applicants also pass the Texas LPC jurisprudence exam and complete 3,000 clock-hours of supervised experience.

Does Texas accept the NCMHCE for LPC licensure?
Yes. The Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC) accepts either the National Counselor Examination or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination, both administered by NBCC. Every applicant must also complete the Texas LPC jurisprudence exam.
How many times can I take the exam in Texas?
As many times as you need. BHEC states there is no limit to the number of times you may attempt the exam for Texas licensure, and that Texas does not require prior approval to register for the NCE or NCMHCE.
How many supervised hours does Texas require?
3,000 clock-hours of supervised experience under a council-approved supervisor, including at least 1,500 hours of direct client counseling — only time actually spent counseling counts. LPC Associates also receive four hours of direct supervision each month during that period.
What degree does Texas require?
A graduate degree in counseling or a counseling-related field with at least 60 semester hours of coursework. Applicants who began their qualifying program before August 1, 2017 need at least 48 semester hours.
What does an LPC licence cost in Texas?
The LPC Associate / LPC application fee is $165, the jurisprudence exam is $39, and renewal is $141. You apply through the council’s Online License System, where you submit the application, pay and upload documents. The national exam fee is paid to NBCC separately.

Question 1

Daniela now grasps the panic cycle, has no medical red flags, and says she is ready for 'the harder stuff.' You move to interoceptive exposure. How do you best conduct it?

▸ Why C is the answer

Interoceptive exposure works by deliberately provoking the feared bodily sensations, staying with them long enough for the fear to crest and subside and for the catastrophic prediction to be disconfirmed, all while she drops safety behaviors, then generalizing the learning through daily homework. Repetition, sustained duration, and letting go of safety aids are exactly what produce the new learning.

Question 2

Daniela's attacks have largely stopped, but her avoidance of supermarkets and crowds remains. How do you best review and revise the treatment plan now?

▸ Why D is the answer

Revising a plan means letting it track the clinical reality. The panic attacks are now controlled, so the live problem is the avoidance that keeps her life narrowed, sitting near exits, no shopping alone, no crowds without Miguel. A graded in-vivo exposure hierarchy targets that directly and keeps residual agoraphobic avoidance from quietly maintaining the disorder.

Question 3

Daniela says her mother thinks she should 'just have more faith and stop making a project out of it,' and part of her wonders whether she could simply live around the supermarket. Staying within core counseling attributes, how do you best respond?

▸ Why A is the answer

Cultural humility means taking her faith and her mother's perspective seriously as part of who she is, while still holding the clinical picture honestly. You explore how she wants to integrate those values and tie the case for facing the avoided situations to her own stated goal of getting her life back, respecting her autonomy without either overriding her culture or quietly endorsing avoidance.
