What type of nursing license do I need?
You must hold an unencumbered, current Registered Nurse (RN) license. This license must be issued in the United States, its territories, or Canada.
How many practice hours are required?
You must complete 2,000 hours of medical-surgical nursing practice. You must earn these hours within the three years immediately preceding your application.
Do I need a specific number of years of experience?
Two years of medical-surgical experience is recommended. However, this is not a strict requirement as long as you meet the 2,000-hour threshold.
What nursing roles count toward the practice hours?
You can earn your hours working as a clinical nurse, manager, or educator. The work must directly relate to medical-surgical nursing.
Can I apply if my license has restrictions?
No. Your RN license must be completely unencumbered. If you have past disciplinary actions, check the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board official handbook for specific guidance.
How do I submit proof of my practice hours?
You will report your hours during the application process. For exact documentation steps and audit policies, review the MSNCB official handbook.
How much does it cost to apply once I am eligible?
The standard fee is $394. AMSN members pay a discounted rate of $267. Both prices include a $90 non-refundable processing fee.
Where do I take the test once approved?
You will schedule your appointment through Pearson VUE. You can test at a physical center or use OnVUE remote proctoring.
What happens if I fail after being approved?
You can schedule a retake through Pearson VUE. The first retake costs $315 for standard applicants and $189 for AMSN members.
What are the eligibility rules to maintain my credential?
You must recertify every five years. You need an active RN license and 1,000 medical-surgical practice hours during that five-year window.
How do I meet the continuing education requirement for renewal?
You need 90 contact hours to renew without re-testing. At least 68 of these must be in medical-surgical topics, and up to 22 can be general professional development.
What if I do not meet the renewal contact hours?
You can renew by re-examination instead. You still need to meet the active RN license and 1,000-hour practice requirements to take this route.
