The two credentials
The AANP FNP-C exam has 135 scored questions and is purely clinical. The ANCC FNP-BC exam has 150 questions and covers clinical practice plus some non-clinical content such as professional role, theory, research, and policy.
Format and focus
The FNP-C (AANP) is built entirely around clinical judgment — assess, diagnose, plan, and evaluate. The FNP-BC (ANCC) weights implementation most heavily and adds professional-role and foundations questions alongside the clinical content.
Which should you choose?
Both are widely accepted for state licensure. Choose the AANP FNP-C if you want a purely clinical exam; choose the ANCC FNP-BC if you prefer some non-clinical content or an employer or state prefers it. Confirm that your state board and employer accept your choice before you register.
